VIDEO: The spiritual hero who was depressed and desperate

By Steve Austin | Anxiety

Who comes to mind when you think of a hero? Spider-Man? Superman? Wonder Woman? Abraham Lincoln? Martin Luther King? Mother Theresa?

The spiritual hero who was depressed and desperate.

A hero is defined as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

So naturally, when I think of a spiritual hero, my first thought is the Old Testament story of a guy who was so desperate and depressed that he begged God to let him die.

Meet Elijah.

We hear nothing about Elijah's parents or where he came from. It's almost like he was dropped out of the sky to be God's holy witness. Because of that, people considered him superhuman. But if you follow Elijah's entire journey, you'll see he was just as flawed, weak, and full of doubt as the rest of us.

And he loved God.

Depression in the Bible

Elijah's story includes attempted murder, an evil queen, suicidal ideation, and music by Earth, Wind and Fire. (Hollywood is really missing it by not turning this journey into a blockbuster movie.)

This is a story about how fear brings even the gods down to size, and how the gentle presence and stubborn love of God redeems us all.
